Tough tuition fees

Do readers know whether sandwich engineering degrees will be £4,500 more expensive than three year degrees in other disciplines?

This letter was prompted by a general comment heard on the radio relating to tuition fees for degree courses in England and it reminded me that some time ago when so-called ‘thick sandwich’ four-year courses were offered for engineering degrees, the third (industry placement) year was charged at a half of the yearly rate of tuition.

Against the background that the UK needs as many of our most talented individuals to embark on engineering degrees as possible, it occurs to me that if the same charges are imposed currently, the total tuition fee for this type of engineering degree will be £4,500 more expensive than three year degrees in other disciplines.

Do readers of PE have any knowledge of whether these sandwich degrees are still offered widely and if it is true that engineering sandwich degrees are being made so more expensive - should the IMechE be campaigning to reduce the fees appropriately?
