Engineering is a leap of faith

Before I had decided on engineering I wanted to be a cameraman, and toyed with music

Looking back at how I got into engineering, it really was a leap of faith as I had little idea of what I was getting into.

Before I had decided on engineering I wanted to be a cameraman, and toyed with music. My school had a great music teacher who arranged after-school band practice three times a week. The education authority arranged music courses during the holidays. It was during these courses that I got to see what it would be like to be a session musician. I decided music was not for me.

Something similar could be run for prospective engineers – a week-long course held in a school, with the days split between talks by engineers about what they do and then the chance to design and make, test and evaluate something. Experts could be on hand to help with design calculations, CAD machining and 3D printing.
