Leyland Trucks was the overall winner of MX Awards in 2010

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has announced the shortlist for its Manufacturing Excellence (MX) Award, comprising 21 of the best manufacturers in the country.

MX is a long-standing awards programme which supports the best of manufacturing in the UK. It is open to all domestic manufacturing companies, regardless of size, age, sector or area of expertise.

Yorkshire is the most successful region on this year's shortlist, with Leeds-based imaging, software and printing manufacturer Agfa Graphics, Rotherham-based mechanical seals manufacturer AESSEAL and Sheffield-based reusable packaging manufacturer Loadhog having been selected.

Stephen Tetlow, chief executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers said: “Manufacturing is at the heart of Yorkshire’s history and future, and these three companies show that the area is full of the innovation and skills essential to helping the country’s economy recover.

“It’s fitting that following Vince Cable’s call for MPs to find examples of great manufacturing around the UK, we can announce this list showing the quality, variety and ingenuity of UK manufacturing.”

The shortlisted companies will receive a visit from a team of expert assessors who will verify the audit responses and offer practical advice and suggestions for the business.

Judging is expected to take place in early November with the MX Awards ceremony held in London, on 23 November 2011.

Previous MX winners include Ford Motor Group, MG Rover Group, Wrightbus, BAE Systems and Coca-Cola.
