Two Sheffield members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers have completed an epic cycle trip from Sheffield to Stuttgart in Germany to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Engineers without Borders.
Rob Thornton and Dave Hayden set off on the 1,367 kilometre trip from Sheffield on 9 July and successfully arrived in Stuttgart on 22 July.
Rob Thornton, from the IMechE Young Members Board said: “This cycle trip was a hugely rewarding if exhausting experience. We hope the money raised will make a difference to the two charities we’ve chosen.”
Rob Thornton is a postgraduate researcher at the University of Sheffield and Dave Hayden is an undergraduate student due to commence his year in industry in Germany in September.
Engineers Without Borders seeks to improve the lives of those in the developing world through student led engineering projects. In the past this has involved the building of water pumps, wind turbines and even pedal powered machinery for the processing of crops in remote locations.
